By now it should be clear that there is a tremendous need for an organization like the St. Augustine Society and its educational arm,
the St. Augustine Society School. Our first education has ended; now it is time for our second one to begin. And we know only too
well the difficulty of achieving this second education on ones own.
We are working to fill the gap left by both academia and the Church. True wisdom is not found in our universities, where there is
learning, a building-up of ideas, but where the constructor is left outside. Learned scholarly work is not to be confused with the artistic
process, the spiritual process. There are no teachers like Augustine in academia, only Great Pretenders. As the poet Cowper stated,
"These truths no theorist could hold".
The Church, with its vast resources, has failed to develop other than a few members with the insights and courage of Augustine. This
is because of the immeasurable difficulty of the labour involved. While the Church has some sort of structural tendency to stay afloat,
there are few skilled helmsmen. Thus all the Church can do is try to inspire people to live moral lives.
The St. Augustine Society School, on the other hand, brings together individuals who are committed to their second education, who
are striving to discover the universal laws of humanity and to integrate them into their very being. They have rejected the insanity
of dogma, but are actively seeking unvarnished truth. In the St. Augustine Society School, these individuals find a forum for growth
and true learning. The result can be a partnership, similar to that in a colony of artists, as our members search for ideas that are
transforming, that make us whole.
